how to dig a tunnel

this play presented the very interesting challenge of having to create the absolute mess of a woman digging a tunnel by hand, even going as far to use her own excrement as a binder (spoiler), while having to leave the venue spotless, having a zero dollar budget, and being performed at a play festival with very limited changeover time between performances. how do we hide everything she needs on stage, or in this case, the floor, without the audience seeing these transitions? and how do we convincingly create the effect of the tunnel growing deeper, while it will always be right at their feet? sure, there are plenty of things I would do differently now, but the constraints of this production led to creative solutions we may have never considered otherwise
